The Mountain Goats - Transcendental Youth [Merge 2012]

これまた凄まじいアートワーク。
4ADから出してた「Tallahassee」や「We Shall All Be Healed」の頃が懐かしいのう。
ホーン・アレンジの大胆な導入、なんて紹介をされていますが、想像通りというか何というか、見事なまでにいつものJohn Darnielle節が展開されとります。
まあそれくらい個性が確立されてると言えるんでしょうな。

Grimes - Visions [4AD 2012]

Purity RingにしてもこのGrimesにしても、モントリオールって今アツいんですかね。
奇しくも同じ4ADからのリリースですが、このアートワークがあのレーベルの作品でそのまま採用される事実に時代を感じさせられます。
Claire Boucher嬢自身のキュートなルックスもあるんでしょうが、アンダーグラウンド・ハードコア・シーンの出自でありつつ徹底してポップネスを追及している姿勢が注目を集めている理由なんでしょうな。
耳馴染みの良いアッパーなエレポ・チューンが並ぶなか、憂いを帯びた「Skin」のようなトラックに心奪われました。

Troy Von Balthazar - ...is With the Demon [This is the New Black 2012]

ハワイでうまれてLAのバンドのフロントマンで欧州で評価が高い孤高のSSWの3rdアルバム。
前作『How to live on Nothing』にも深く感銘を受けたけれど、今作も期待を裏切らないクオリティ。
Sparklehorseが引き合いに出されたりもしているらしく、ユルくてどこかザラついた感触のサウンドと朴訥なスタイルのヴォーカルで紡がれる歌の数々からは確かにMark Linkousが醸し出していたムードと近しいものを感じる。

課外活動的な作品が続いていたDakota Suite、久々に原点回帰のウタモノ・アルバム。
静謐で内省的なサウンドのなかに垣間見える微かな希望。
深く、豊潤な音空間を堪能出来る作品。
